Where does matcha tea come from? Origin, plant, leaf

Matcha, the iconic Japanese powdered green tea, originated in China during the Song Dynasty (10th–13th century). It was introduced to Japan in 1191 by the Buddhist monk Eisai, who brought back tea seeds and the practice of whisked powdered tea from China, recommending it as an aid to Zen meditation. Eisai planted the first tea plants (Camellia sinensis) around Kyoto and in the Kyushu region. Matcha then became the central element of the Japanese tea ceremony (Chanoyu). Today, this powder made from tencha leaves is cultivated in exceptional terroirs such as Uji, Nishio and Kagoshima.

What is matcha, that lovely green tea powder?

What is matcha, this lovely green tea powder?

Matcha is a shade-grown green tea which comes from Japan. The Japanese characters used for matcha tea are: æŠč茶 - which literally means "ground tea".

Matcha tea is a Japanese tea grown using artisanal methods. Unlike other teas, the leaves are not infused but finely ground: this means that the whole leaf, rich in antioxidants, is consumed, up to 137 times more than in a classic green tea! This powder is mixed with hot water in a matcha bowl, using a bamboo whisk called a chasen.

Appreciated around the world, matcha appeals with its emerald green colour, umami taste, and exceptional virtues.

How to choose a good matcha?

How to choose a good matcha?

I have been an enthusiast for Matcha for over 12 years. When asked how to choose a good matcha, I recommend checking the following criteria:

  • Colour: intense emerald green (avoid dull or yellowish colours).
  • Aroma: fresh, vegetal, and slightly sweet, with no musty smell.
  • Taste: rich and balanced umami flavour, without pronounced bitterness.
  • Texture: very fine powder, velvety on the palate.
  • Origin: organic matcha from Japan, ideally stone-ground.
  • Certification: recognised organic labels (AB, Eurofeuille, or JAS).

FAQs

Is it good to drink matcha tea every day?

Yes, drinking matcha daily is beneficial: it combines the power of antioxidants with stable energy thanks to the combination of caffeine and L-theanine, an amino acid essential for relaxation. It supports focus, immunity, and cardiovascular health. Just be reasonable: 1 to 2 bowls a day is enough. Just avoid drinking it too late in the day (caffeine) or right before a meal if you are iron deficient.

Why organic matcha?

At Kumiko Matcha, I only offer organic matcha for three key reasons:

  • Protecting the environment from pesticides and chemical fertilizers
  • Protecting your health and that of our partner farmers in Japan
  • Make Kumiko a positive force for a better world

That's why we are certified organic (AB and Eurofeuille) as a direct importer, and we carry out additional laboratory tests to guarantee the purity of your matcha.

What does matcha taste like?

Matcha tea offers a delicious taste umami, a subtle balance between sweetness and freshness. Its beautiful emerald green colour reveals aromas of green vegetables, with mineral or fruity notes.

After returning from my travels in Asia, I was disappointed with the matcha tea available here: I could only find "fake matcha," which is yellow in colour, has an unpleasant bitterness, and a dusty texture. In fact, this is still the type of product you can buy in supermarkets.

What are the contraindications of matcha tea?

Matcha is generally well tolerated, but excessive consumption can cause nervousness, sleep disturbances, constipation (dehydrating effect of caffeine), or exacerbate existing heartburn. It is also recommended to avoid consuming it with meals in cases of iron deficiency, and to limit consumption in children, pregnant women, or nursing mothers.

A quality matcha: what justifies its price?

The price of matcha reflects 1,000 years of artisan expertise. It requires meticulous shading, careful harvesting, and slow stone grinding.

This scarcity is accentuated by organic farming and growing demand in Europe.

Our prices reflect this excellence, ranging from €29.95 for the Toki organic to €200.00 for the Legendary Hinata organic by Takeshi-san.
