What is a chawan, the Japanese bowl for matcha tea?

A central utensil in the tea ceremony, the chawanis a Japanese bowl used to prepare matcha tea. It is a flared bowl whose diameter and depth allow the tea to be easily whisked using a bamboo whisk, called a chasena chasen.

Traditional Japanese bowls are usually made ofceramic, porcelain, or clay.

Choosing the right matcha bowl in 3 steps:

  1. The right size: Opt for a bowl specifically designed for matcha rather than a large bowl for ramen, miso soup, soba noodles or Japanese rice.
  2. Functional or artistic? For everyday use, choose a practical bowl. For a unique and aesthetically pleasing piece, opt for a stunning handcrafted bowl!
  3. The material: The first essential criterion, it directly influences the temperature, texture, and flavor of your matcha tea. Let's examine the three materials together.

The ceramic bowl

The majority of Japanese bowls are made of ceramic. Robust and durable, ceramic also allows for greater creativity and visual appeal, with the possibility of embellishing it with a variety of patterns.

The porcelain bowl

For higher-end teaware, there are also porcelain tea ceremonial bowls. With their translucent appearance and fine, smooth texture, they are reminiscent of Chinese pottery. Unfortunately, they are quite fragile.

The clay bowl

Clay is more economical and gives a rustic touch to a bowl. It offers a rough texture and a polished appearance. Over time, clay tends to chip more than other traditional materials.

What is the difference between a traditional bowl and an artisan bowl?

At Kumiko Matcha, we offer a wide range of Japanese teaware, with different bowls in various colors, materials and patterns which I will present to you in the following section.

For beginners: Our porcelain bowls made using the traditional Japanese method are perfect for getting started with matcha.

For lovers of handicrafts: The unique creations of our partner artisans Yamashita-san and Hozan-san, magnificent hand-shaped ceramic or clay bowls.

Japanese matcha bowl made by a Shigaraki artisan

In order to convey the rich history of Japanese pottery and all its centuries-old craftsmanship, I wanted to offer a genuine Japanese artisan bowl in the Shigaraki-yaki style.

A real challenge, since I found artisan bowls priced at over €400, and even incredible creations priced at over €8,000!

This was unsatisfactory for me, as I wanted to find high-quality, affordable, artisanal Japanese bowls for my community.

That's where I found Hozan-san's small artisan workshop. Initially reluctant to work with me, he finally agreed to create a limited number of bowls: the Shigaraki artisan matcha tea bowl was born.

Shigaraki artisan matcha tea bowls are distinguished by:

its rough yet sophisticated exterior texture, with beautiful reflections;

and its pearly, smooth, and pleasant interior texture, ideal for drinking and observing the green colour of matcha tea.

The bottom of the matcha bowl has a kind of second mini-bottom, which allows the suspended matcha to settle, offering a final, more concentrated sip.

Japanese matcha bowl made by a Karatsu artisan

Karatsu pottery (ć”æŽ„ç„Œ, karatsu-yaki) is considered one of the most prestigious types of pottery for tea ceremonies, alongside Raku (愜焌, raku-yaki) and Hagi (萩焌, hagi-yaki) styles.

That's why I'm very proud to work with our artisan partner Yamashita-san, the surfer potter.

For him, bowls should above all be everyday objects. That's why he is committed to making products at very reasonable prices.

Karatsu artisan matcha bowls are all handmade using traditional clay and glaze from the region. They are the result of over 30 years of experience in this art.

The bottom of the bowl also features a beautiful detail: a small swirl, which helps to keep the matcha green tea suspended and offers a final, more concentrated sip for a more intense pleasure.

Traditional porcelain chawan matcha bowl

Finally, in keeping with my desire to give my community access to high-quality tea utensils at reasonable prices, traditional chawan offer a wonderful experience for any matcha tea enthusiast.

With their elegant and refined design, their flat bottom and height offer the ideal dimensions for effectively whisking matcha tea using a bamboo chasen whisk.

The traditional chawan matcha bowl is available in:

"izuna blanc" series

"écume" series

Japanese maple series

"volcano" series

I hope you find the bowl that will accompany you on your taste journey with delicious organic matcha tea.
