Sumptuous and full of sweetness

When I received my handmade chasen, I was very surprised by its fineness and beauty. Then, when I used it to make my first matcha tea, I was truly amazed by how sweet it was to use and how fine the froth was. It's really nothing like a chasen made in China.

Long live Kumiko!

The products are of very good quality and the founder of Kumiko gives us all the information about the products. The result is above what you can get elsewhere.

Great!

I am really very satisfied with my purchase! With this chasen, the matcha foams much better and there is much more froth, which is very pleasant! :) What's more, and this is really very important to me, this purchase helps to support the artisan who makes it!! :)

An artisan masterpiece from the Hirata family

Manufactured Entirely by hand by Hirata-san and his father, Japanese master artisans, this exceptional chasen combines tradition, precision, and passion. Passed down from generation to generation, their ancestral know-how is based on techniques that are 500 years old. Each whisk, rare and precious, is carefully crafted to offer shinari – this unique flexibility which can only be achieved by human hands.

Strengths

According to Hirata-san’s father, a master artisan of chasen (matcha whisk),

“The taste and enjoyment of matcha depend on the quality of the chasen. If the chasen is high quality, then the matcha will have an excellent flavour.”

This whisk is made entirely by hand by Hirata-san and his father.

Together, the two of them can only make 10 a day, while the demand for their master artisan whisks is beyond their capacity even in Japan alone.

Their knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. Hirata-san has been making matcha whisks by hand for 20 years, and his father for over 50 years.

They use the same craft techniques as 500 years ago.

Hirata-san invites you to take pleasure in choosing your matcha tea utensils. Because an excellent whisk will produce a flavoursome matcha.

This whisk is actually a precious and rare work of art.

Follow the instructions in our guide to preparing matcha tea to use this matcha whisk.

Be sure to always keep this delicate piece dry and wipe it with a dry cloth after use.

I highly recommend that you use a whisk holder to place your whisk in after use so that it keeps its shape, as shown in this photo:

How to care for your handmade matcha whisk

Hirata-san gave me several tips and answers:

  • The bamboo used to make an artisanal bamboo whisk is naturally very hard, and it is inevitable that at some point it will break.
  • Under the best conditions, your matcha whisk will not break for 2 to 3 years, or even much longer.

Here are several tips to maximize its lifespan.

  • do not expose to direct sunlight
  • Do not expose it to drafts (wind, air conditioning) or temperature changes (near an oven or heat source, radiator, etc.).
  • Use it regularly (at least once a week or a little less) so that there is a little moisture present.

  • Handcrafted matcha tea whisk made in Japan and handmade by Hirata-san and his father
  • black bamboo with 5 threads in 3 shades of green - 60-70 strands
  • hard plastic protective tin, warranty for protection
  • Official bucket of Japanese chasen artisans (Nara region)
  • ~11cm high (12cm in the tin), ~6cm in diameter
  • keep dry and wipe with a dry cloth after use

L'aventure Kumiko Matcha
