Superb bowl

I am very happy to have acquired this beautiful piece, which brings energy and beauty to the matcha tea ceremonial grade. I really enjoy using it every morning, knowing its origin. It is very pleasant to the touch and the contrast between the inside and outside is a source of wonder.

The tea ceremony becomes magical

A friend of mine owns this bowl; she did a matcha tea ceremony for me with it. And without knowing its story, I was amazed: by the exterior texture, by the white inside, by the pattern naturally imprinted by the fire that gives golden reflections, by the bowl’s "grip".
You could feel it was a different bowl. So I finally found it again on this site.

A beautiful bowl

I've had time to use it since ordering it. And I'm very satisfied with it, both in terms of its appearance and the pleasure of using it to drink matcha tea or other beverages. It's a purchase I don't regret, quite the contrary.

Shigaraki's Exceptional Matcha Bowl: the art of Hozan-san

Handcrafted by Hozan-san, Japanese potter from third generation, this matcha bowl from the Series #6 (2023) stands out for its authenticity and artisanal elegance. Designed based on the Shigaraki local clay, each piece — limited to Only 30 copies available — embodies the ancestral know-how of this renowned region of Japan.

Strengths

  • Unique texture: gross exterior and rough, smooth pearly white interior which enhances the green color of matcha.
  • Artisanal: fhandcrafted in Shigaraki, Japan, by Hozan-san, a third-generation potter.
  • Organic design: irregular edges and natural forms which reveal the potter's handiwork.
  • Limited edition: Series #6 – 2023, only 30 unique pieces.

In 2018, I went to Japan to conduct a search authentic artisanal bowls, exploring major pottery regions such as Karatsu, Arita, and Shigaraki. After visiting prestigious artisan workshops with magnificent but inaccessible creations, I discovered now at Shigaraki une small family of artisans enthusiasts, potters since three generations.

Impressed by their expertise and humility, we created this together. single matcha bowl, handcrafted with local soil.
Son rough and textured exterior contrast with a smooth pearly white interior which highlights the deep green color of matcha.
A subtle detail is hidden at the bottom: a slight curve that collects the last drops, for a last sip more intense and flavoursome.

Each piece tells a story of patience, tradition, and Japanese beauty.

Live tour of Hozan-san's workshop

In this video, I guide you through Hozan-san's pottery workshop. You will discover his artisan space, his pieces in production—including our Shigaraki bowls—and his tools.

The secret of Hozan-san's icing

A very specific technique is used to achieve the rough and “volcanic” look of the outside of the bowl; watch this short interview:

Photo report

Above are 20 bowls in their "biscuit" state. Their shape is 30% larger than the final result because they will shrink during the last firing.

They have already undergone two firings in the potter’s kiln, and you can see the interior glaze.

Here is our potter posing in front of his kiln:
His art has been passed down from father to son for three generations. His specialty is create artisan items in small quantities.

All of his pieces are created by hand with templates he made itself.
The two curved pieces of wood on the left are used to shape the curves of the bowl. And on the right is a bamboo ruler used to calibrate the height and depth of the bowl.

The artisan nature of these works This means that each series will have a slightly different appearance due to the firing and shaping conditions, which always have a semi-random component.

Differences between Japanese pottery and Western pottery

First of all, the material is different: while we use a mixture of earth (clay, marl, silica), most Japanese potters use only clay.

Just as we hold the bowls in our hands to admire them before bringing them to our mouths for tasting the matcha tea, great attention is paid to the texture of the bowl and how it transmits heat.

The other very different element is that, in the West, people often use a set of identical cups, whereas in Japan it can happen that you have lots of different cups. Originally, in the tea ceremony, it is the host’s responsibility to choose a selection of cups that go well together to please their guests.

Finally, the Japanese find beauty in the distortions and irregularities "accidental" of the pottery and its glaze. Wear rounds the edges of the bowls, and makes them more beautiful. This is the concept of wabi-sabi.

Enjoy your tasting!

Preparing matcha tea

When preparation of matcha tealeave most of the bowl empty to admire the colour of matcha and pearly white during your own matcha tea ritual. Notice the texture and reflections of the matcha.

This artisanal bowl also has the features of a summer bowl because its edges are open and allow heat to dissipate more easily.

The bottom of the bowl is rounded and its capacity is particularly suitable for preparing 130-150mL.

Prepare a matcha. When holding the matcha bowl in your hands, touch the bottom of the bowl with your middle finger. Rest your index and ring fingers on the sides of the textured rim. Bring the bowl to your nose and smell the matcha. Take a first sip. Experience the aroma and flavour. Then the length of the aftertaste. Repeat. Meditate.
