How many calories are in a serving of matcha green tea powder?

Matcha is often recommended as part of a healthy and balanced diet, but what about its calorie content? Can you consume matcha without worrying about adding a large number of calories to your diet?
How many calories are there in matcha tea powder?
Matcha tea is a food that is virtually calorie-free: it contains only 3 kcal per serving (1 gram).
These 3 calories correspond to the carbohydrates and fiber provided by ingesting the entire tencha green tea leaf, after it has been ground into matcha powder.
Real matcha contains no added sugar. So be careful with matcha latte mixes available for sale: they often contain several grams of sugar and animal milk, which can alter the nutritional values of the drink.
What is the calorie content of matcha latte?
The calorie content of matcha latte varies greatly, depending on the recipe realised.
A matcha latte realised with soy milk and oat milk would contain approximately 45 calories without added sweeteners, compared to 68 calories for a matcha latte realised with UHT whole milk.
But the prize goes to almond milk and skimmed cow's milk, for a total of around 35 calories!
We can therefore see that matcha latte is a drink with a very reasonable calorie content compared to all the benefits it provides.
What about the matcha latte available in coffee shops?
With this information in mind, it is tempting to think that matcha latte served in specialty chains is a healthy option.
However, this is not always true: if we take the example of the matcha latte served by Starbucks, we can view the information on the brand's website that the matcha latte served there contains a large quantity of sugar and calories. Since the matcha tea used for culinary grade cooking and drink realisation is more bitter than high quality matcha, sweeteners such as white sugar or syrups are added to make the tea smoother.
For example, in France, a large (473 mL) matcha latte realised with soy milk contains 154 kcal and 10.8 grams of sugar.

Now that you know how to prepare your matcha in a healthy way, there is still one important factor to consider: choosing a good quality matcha.
