The matcha latte is a delicious, creamy drink that is winning over more and more matcha green tea lovers. Easy to make at home, the matcha latte combines the energizing and antioxidant benefits of organic matcha tea with the smoothness of milk, often plant-based. Whether you're a beginner or an enthusiast, discover in this article how to make the perfect matcha latte, hot or iced, with original recipes and tips to elevate this traditional Japanese drink, whether in its simple form or reimagined.

How to make a matcha latte? The basic recipe
The starting point for an organic matcha latte tea is quite simple.
The main ingredients of a matcha latte:
- finely ground green tea leaves in powder form, in other words organic matcha tea
- water (hot or cold depending on the recipe)
- organic milk (plant-based or not)
The steps to prepare a classic matcha latte:
-
Prepare matcha tea the traditional way by pouring hot water over the tea powder in a matcha bowl.
-
Whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk until you get a homogeneous, slightly frothy mixture.
-
Then pour the prepared matcha into a glass containing the organic milk of your choice (preferably plant-based, but another article can guide you on which milk to choose for a matcha latte).
-
Add ice cubes if you'd like a refreshing version.
-
Sweeten to taste to finish.
What does a matcha latte taste like?
The taste of a matcha latte is slightly different from the taste of matcha tea in its traditional form. Thanks to the addition of milk to the matcha, the matcha latte becomes smoother and offers a sweet flavor. The milky notes add roundness and a lovely balance to the herbaceous notes of organic matcha.
By using a quality matcha, such as organic premium matcha, the umami remains present on the palate, without bitterness or astringency.
For more aromatic complexity, it's worth adding ingredients with floral notes, such as rose syrup or flower honey.
That's why Sabine is sharing with us today a delicious matcha latte recipe with almond milk and lavender honey, elegantly combining plant-based, floral and confectionery notes!

This frothy, indulgent matcha latte is best enjoyed at room temperature.

How to prepare an iced matcha latte?
Preparing an iced matcha latte is very simple!
To do this, pour the two teaspoons of matcha into a shaker, then add ice cubes and a little water to fill the shaker 2/3 of the way, then shake several times until the powder is perfectly mixed with the water!
Then simply mix it all with almond milk, add the honey, and it's ready!

My tips for making a perfect matcha latte every time
To help you get your preparation right every time, I'm sharing a few of my tips for achieving the perfect matcha latte:
- To prevent lumps from forming when preparing the matcha, try pouring in a small amount of cold water and mixing the powder into the water with a Chasen whisk, then adding the hot water.
- If the matcha powder isn't fine enough, I recommend sifting it; that way you shouldn't find any more lumps at the bottom of your cup.
- To get a beautiful milk foam, you can use a milk frother for an even creamier texture.
- For the best possible taste, avoid using tap water. Filtered or spring water will give the tea a better taste!

How to choose a good matcha for a latte?
For a tasty matcha latte, opt for a quality organic culinary-grade matcha or premium matcha, finely ground and bright green. Avoid powders that are too coarse or of low quality, as they can give a bitter or earthy taste. A good matcha for lattes should strike a balance between sweetness and umami.
What is the best water temperature for preparing a matcha latte?
The ideal temperature for preparing a matcha latte is between 70°C and 80°C. Water that is too hot can burn the powder and make the drink bitter, while water that is too cold prevents proper dissolution and release of the aromas.
Can you sweeten a matcha latte with ingredients other than sugar?
Yes, the matcha latte can be sweetened with honey (as in some of the recipes above), maple syrup, agave syrup, coconut sugar or even natural sweeteners, depending on your preferences, to vary the flavors while keeping an indulgent drink.
